Preserve the Water

Ask any preparedness expert what kills people first in a crisis and the answer is always the same: water. You can go weeks without food. You get about three days without water. A serious preservation plan treats water as its own category — because filtering it, storing it, and making it safe are three different jobs.

The Rule: One Gallon Per Person Per Day

That’s drinking and basic sanitation. A family of four needs 28 gallons for a single week — which is why storage and the ability to make found water safe both matter. Store what you can; filter the rest.

Gravity Filters

Countertop gravity systems filter gallons at a time with no power and no plumbing — the backbone of most home emergency water plans. Look for independent lab test data on what they actually remove (not just marketing claims), filter life in gallons, and flow rate. Read our head-to-head comparison: Berkey vs AquaTru vs LifeStraw vs ZeroWater — including what the lab reports really say.

Portable Purifiers & Filters

For bug-out bags, travel, and backup: squeeze filters, pump filters, UV pens, and purification tablets. The right pick depends on your water source — clear mountain streams and muddy ponds are different problems.

Long-Term Water Storage

Stackable containers, 55-gallon barrels, and bathtub bladders. Stored water needs rotation (every 6–12 months) or treatment to stay safe — we’ll cover the exact rotation schedule and which treatments actually work.

What to Look For in Any Filter

  • Third-party test data — NSF/ANSI certifications or independent lab reports, not just “removes 99.99%” on the box
  • Filter lifespan in gallons — divide the price by gallons for true cost
  • Flow rate — a filter that takes all day to make a gallon won’t get used
  • What it doesn’t remove — no portable filter handles everything; know the gaps
